Spirit Day

The boys were very green on Friday in celebration of our class spirit week. Many thanks for your parental support in reminding the boys of their green attire and for your good humor as your boys arrived home with green hair :) Check out the boys enjoying their new "Think Green" spirit sign and our green and white cupcakes!

Spirit Week

The ninth age classes are being celebrated this week as it is our spirit week! The week culminates with the boys and girls wearing their class colors on Friday (green and white are displayed in 9-1's banner!). Below are pictures from our handprint banner spirit project.

"Shipwrecked"

The boys are busy at work on their newest composition, "Shipwrecked". I thought I would share some interesting facts I have gleaned upon reading their stories. I can not wait for the boys to share their compositions aloud!
Enjoy!

-Islands often exhibit freezing temperatures and extreme heat.

-There is often a hidden treasure chest with masts and sails inside for treasure.

-Snails make good pets.

-Most sailboats are painted with flames.

-Dormant volcanoes can be deemed such after a 4 minute exploration

-Snails say “meow”

-Island natives always know English, but usually don’t know where food or water is

-Rescue airplanes can often float and sail

-You can survive by sleeping your way to shore while in the ocean

-Boat safety kits contain machetes and rocks

-Most islands have a hidden escape airplane or jet

-Tigers make good pets

-Tigers are good transportation

-Coconut trees also grow bananas

-Kit Kat Bars are grown on exotic plants

-Many island caves are secret passageways to Brooklyn, N.Y.

-Burritos can be found on most uninhabited islands.

A Very Generous Group

The 9-1 boys have amazed us all. We had hoped to reach 300 cans today, and exceeded it with 370. WOW!
Dr. Trusty made an annoucement this morning and left us a note this afternoon to let us know how excited he was.
The food was boxed up and transported to Paul's Place this afternoon...the entire lower school has a lot to be proud of!

Yesterday we aimed for 200, and exceeding it with 230....
We aimed for 250 today and are up to 289....

Day Two of Food Drive

The boys have ALREADY exceeded our class goal of 90 cans.
We are up to 131 today!
We have raised the bar to 210, hoping to feed even more families by Friday. This goal was selected as Dr. Trusty mentioned his former 4th grade class collected 200 cans every year. The 9-1 boys are quite excited for our newest challenge! Thank you to all of the families who have already contributed. Check back for updates as our numbers grow.

Reading Buddies Meet Again!

Our reading buddies read a story about different families in class on Thursday. We then made portraits of all of our families, discussing and showing all of the similarities and differences amongst them.
We connected all of them together as a quilt, hung outside of Ms. Clark's room, showing how all of our unique families look like a beautiful patchwork quilt.

Today Ms. Gentry's math class showed off their dance moves to a new rounding song. The song, "Slide to the side" reminds us to look for a "five" to determine whether we should round up or down. They did a fantastic job!

Math Bake Sale

Our Math group was busy selling our s'mores last Wednesday. We had decided on a price per s'more, and were busy creating change and passing out s'mores to the hungry ninth age students.

....and Dr. Martire!

We spent the next day calculating our results!

We earned a total of $27.03!

We are eager to use that money to purchase donations for the canned food drive in November.

Our Next Student "Caught"

We had our most recent student "caught" doing a good deed. While walking from snack, he noticed a classmate with two untied shoes, giving up his spot in line, our good-deed-doer quickly came to his friend's rescue and helped with his shoes. Great job!!

9th Agers and Their Green Thumbs

We met again on the blacktop to plant more seedlings this week. Our students worked hard to plant the correct number of seeds in each section, carefully cover then with dirt and water before properly labeling the entire planter. We have become quite a group of gardeners!
