Rounding Comes to Life!

Today we worked more on rounding. To make the concept come alive we created a life-size number line.
First a student would write a number to be rounded (three or four digits long)
Then another student would select the place to which we would round, and underline it (tens, hundreds, thousands). This same student would also draw an arrow to the place which dictates the "up or down" rounding of the number.

A student would write our "rounded down" number and our "rounded up" number on the two end poly spots. Our final student would walk our number up the number line to find its place.

After locating its spot, the student announces whether she would round up or round down.

Our First Student "Caught"

Calvert teachers are on the look-out for students completing "good deeds". Each week 10 different teachers hand out bracelets to reward lower school students for exceptionally good actions. One of our classmates was "caught doing a good deed" yesterday and received one of the bracelets! We are very proud of him!

The Boss of the Plains

Our reading groups are working on a variety of short stories. One such story is the true tale of John Stetson, inventor of the famous "cowboy hat". After reading the story, we created advertisements, emphasizing all of the benefits of this unique hat!

Our newest student post was blogged today! Check it out below:

"In art this week we finished our 3-d rooms. Today we played never-out and dodge ball.Next week we have our hoppers-cricket soccer game. In class we learned how to do our names in hieroglyphics."

Word Problems Come to Life

We have been working on 4-step problems in class and are now creating our own! We had fun in class as the students took the "teacher spot" at the board and taught Ms. Gentry how to solve word problems!

Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics

We are begining to study hieroglyphics in history class, so we took the time to learn how to write our names using the ancient symbols. Check out the students' work below!

Greater Than, Less Than, or Equal To!

Our math groups are covering "greater than, less than and equal to" in small groups. Ms. Gentry's group played a competitive number game to utilize our new vocabulary, review place value and add some excitment to this topic. Check out some of the photos below:

By the Shores of Silver Lake

Some of our ninth age reading groups are working on a Laura Ingalls Wilder story, "By the Shores of Silver Lake". We have been discussing how Laura's older sister, Mary, is able to get onto a train and what her train-ride experience would be like after developing blindness from scarlet fever. We are impressed with all that Mary accomplishes; especially after finding that using a partner to guide us (with closed eyes)to our seats was very difficult!

Student Posting

Today we had our second student blogger! Check out his post below:

"Today we smashed ice with our caveman tools. Ms. Gentry gave us a piece of a meteorite. A classmate brought in native american tools"

Cave Tool Project

9-1 is learning all about the lives of cave men, women and children! To learn a little more about how they lived, we created our own cave tools out of rocks, sticks and string. It was a difficult task but the boys did a terrific job!

All School Assembly

The entire school gathered on Thursday to welcome in the new school year. It is was a wonderful opportunity for our entire community to take a moment and examine the year ahead of us all. Dr. Martire always kicks off the year with words of wisdom; this year they were "effort" and "respect". These two themes resonated with the 9-1 boys after spending part of Wednesday brainstroming our goals for the year!
